learning

Living in the mountains for five days created many different learning opportunities for our family. We landed at a rustic guesthouse with a giant covered terrace perched on the side of the mountain. While there we watched all possible weather systems come alive from fog rolling in, lightning striking, pounding rain and power outages. All while hearing about a cyclone off the coast of Sri Lanka, a hurricane in the US and an earthquake and possible tsunami on the westcoast of Canada.
We decided with the changing, cooler weather that this would be a good spot to work on school, and learn other things about the surrounding area.

To start the day each morning we were overfed a delicious breakfast of fruit, fruit smoothies and coconut roti.
Then we would set out for a hike.
Or to town.
We watched women picking tea, learned how tea is made and and participated in a tea tasting.
Everyday we saw many things growing that we eat everyday at home, including peppercorns.
We also learned about Sri Lankan construction.
And how to make fabric for saris.
One evening our host taught Girl and I how to make Sri Lankan curry, which we enjoyed for dinner.
Not surprisingly the highlight for Buddy and Girl was learning to drive a tuk tuk.
Gone are the helmets, seat belts and booster seats of our life in Canada. Thankful for the kindness of Sri Lankan strangers who taught us about things we never knew before.

    1. Miss you too! I should also say Girl has been learning numbers (counting backwards), hand-eye coordination and patience by playing Dutch blitz!

    1. Thanks Renee! I am constantly surprised by the kindness of strangers here and the eagerness they have to share something with the kids - without wanting anything in return.

  4. Now that is learning! Your kids are learning and experiencing so much more than they would back in a classroom in Canada!

    1. It is kind of overwhelming sometimes, worrying about the reading and the math - but days like this really help to illustrate all the learning they are doing through travel. Looking forward to meeting you!
