from beach to buddha

We spent our first days in Sri Lanka at the beach. Then it was time to head for the hills. We took a morning making our way to the train station via tuk tuk, bus and foot to catch the train for Kandy. After all the "mind the gap" business on the trains in the UK, it was interesting people watching plus we learned the art of boarding the trains.
After a few hours on the train we arrived in rainy Kandy, and made our way in the dark to our warm and welcoming guesthouse. They told us that the next day was Full Moon Day and that if it is raining in the morning of Full Moon Day, it will rain all day. They were right! But a little rain didn't stop us "Wetcoasters". Yes, I know how lame I sound (basically, it rains a lot where we live in Canada). We saw lots of city "wildlife" including: lizards, koi, monkeys, flying ants, mice and dogs.
Then we decided to set off in search of the giant white Buddha.
After walking up a long and wet road, with tuk tuks whizzing by, we made it to the base of the sanctuary, left our shoes, took our flower offering and made our way up.
Despite the rain, the view was amazing, the monks friendly and the place peaceful. So lovely to find a quiet bit of space in a buzzing city.
After dinner of vegetable roti, egg roti, samosas, coconut roti and tiny bananas, The Dad and Girl braved the torrential rain again to visit the Sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic.

  1. Oh good lord I think I had a heart attack when I saw that lizard picture. I hope you were using a super awesome lens and were safe and sound far away. I hope that this part of your trip is as awesome as the last part. It certainly looks amazing so far. Can't wait to see more. I like Vi's braids. Hope that helps keep the curiosity to a reasonable level. Take care kids - love you xxx

    1. The lizards are close, eating the fish from the lake. Certainly caught us off guard!
